Elder Abuse: What It Is, How to Spot It, and What You Can Do.
June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, and it’s a cause we take seriously at The Terry Law Firm. We’ve seen firsthand how abuse and neglect in nursing homes can leave lasting pain for families and their loved ones.
Mary Killough the director of Illinois Department of Aging stated, “Elder abuse is sadly more common than many people realize, but it is largely preventable, by understanding what elder abuse is, recognizing the signs, and taking steps to prevent it, we can create safer and more supportive communities for older adults.”
So What is Elder Abuse?
The United States Department of Justice defines elder abuse as, “an intentional or negligent act by any person that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to an older adult. It is a term used to describe five subtypes:
- Physical Abuse
- Psychological Abuse
- Financial Exploitation
- Neglect and Abandonment
- Sexual Abuse
How Can you Spot Elder Abuse?
Recognizing warning signs of elder abuse can make all the difference for your loved one. Abuse and neglect in nursing homes or long-term care facilities often go unnoticed until serious harm has already occurred. It is so important to stay alert and active in your loved one’s care to catch these warning signs early on. A few important things to look out for are:
- Bedsores
- Broken bones
- Burns
- Emotional or behavioral changes
- Poor hygiene
- Unexplained weight loss
